HOW TO GET YOUR CLASS A CDL

Getting your CDL may seem confusing, but it really comes down to a few steps.

STEP 1 — STUDY FOR YOUR CDL PERMIT

Before you can start driving a semi, you need to get your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

Download the CDL Prep App and start studying. (Links below)

For a Class A CDL, you will need to pass the required written knowledge tests at the DMV.

STUDY FIRST → TAKE YOUR TESTS → GET YOUR PERMIT

STEP 2 — GET YOUR CDL PERMIT

Go to the DMV and take your required CDL knowledge tests.

Once you pass the required tests and complete the DMV requirements, you can receive your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

Permit in hand? Now you’re ready for the next step!

STEP 3 — COMPLETE YOUR ELDT TRAINING

First-time Class A CDL drivers must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT).

This includes:

✓ Theory/Classroom Training
✓ Behind-the-Wheel Training

Your training must be completed through an approved provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

STEP 4 — COME DRIVE WITH US!

Once you have your permit and have completed the required steps to begin training, it’s time for the fun part.

We will teach you the skills you need to safely operate a Class A commercial vehicle and prepare for your CDL skills test.

You’ll work on things like:

STEP 5 — TAKE YOUR CDL SKILLS TEST

After you have completed the required training and are ready, you will take your CDL Skills Test.

The skills test includes:

1. Vehicle Inspection (Pre-Trip)
Show that you know your truck and can determine whether it is safe to drive.

2. Basic Control Skills
Show that you can safely maneuver and control the truck.

3. Road Test
Show that you can safely operate the truck on public roads.
